United Airlines flight lands at LAX after smoke reported by crew
By Let's Talk Los Angeles on May 11, 2014
A United Airlines 757 made a U-turn over the Pacific Ocean and returned to Los Angeles International Airport today when smoke was spotted in the cabin.Passengers told a Los Angeles radio station, KNX, that they donned inflatable vests and were at one point told the airliner was going to set down “at an airport on an island off the coast,” as one man told the station. The jet was originally diverted back to LAX, but L.A. firefighters at one point were told the plane was going to another airport, one firefighter told City News Service. The Los Angeles Times reported that it was United flight 1296, bound from LAX to Honolulu.
