L.A. Storm Warning for Christmas
Southern California, is expecting a period of severe winter weather as powerful storm systems move through the region during the Christmas holiday. These conditions are being driven by strong atmospheric river events—often referred to as a “Pineapple Express”—which funnel vast amounts of moisture from the Pacific Ocean into the state. As a result, communities across Southern California are facing days of sustained and sometimes intense rainfall.
The prolonged downpours expected between December 23 and December 25 significantly increase the risk of flooding in urban areas, low-lying regions, and near rivers and streams. In addition to flooding, the saturated ground raises concerns about debris flows and mudslides, particularly in areas that have been affected by recent wildfires. Burn scar regions are especially vulnerable because vegetation that would normally stabilize the soil has been destroyed, making hillsides more likely to collapse under heavy rain.
These hazardous conditions are also expected to disrupt holiday travel, with slick roadways, reduced visibility, and potential road closures impacting commuters and travelers alike. Emergency officials and local authorities are urging residents to remain alert, avoid flood-prone areas, and stay informed through weather updates as the storms continue through Christmas.
