Angels moving to Long Beach?
Angels Baseball is expected to offer a proposal in October, leaving a few months for Anaheim city officials to make a deal before the team opt-out of its current lease agreement by year’s end or be bound by it until 2029.
While the Angels lease is expiring at the end of this year, the city of Long Beach is already making plans, offering to build a new waterfront stadium near its convention center. The City of Long Beach will expand its current upbeat downtown and waterfront area.
Long Beach’s plans for the spot
Regardless of whether this deal happens, Mayor Robert Garcia has been clear the property shouldn’t remain a 13-acre parking lot much longer.
In his “Building a Better Long Beach” address Garcia said he would kick off a new visioning process for developing the waterfront, with a specific focus on what’s become known as the “elephant lot,” which is the city’s largest undeveloped parcel.
What city leaders are saying
During his address, Garcia said that in the process of deciding what should fill the space, he and other community partners would need to keep other commitments in mind. “We know the Olympics are going to stage some amazing events on this site,” he said, referring to Long Beach’s role in the 2028 L.A. Olympics.
“Look at the size of it,” Garcia said. “L.A Live could fit on that site. Most stadiums could fit on that site.” “But we also have to start thinking, as a community: What should actually happen long-term on this site? Should it be open space? Should it be developed?”
