Los Angeles Heat Wave
Los Angeles is heading into a major heat wave this week, August 25–29, 2026, with the worst conditions expected inland and the possibility of record temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for much of the L.A. region from Tuesday morning through Friday evening.
🌡️ What Los Angeles can expect
- Tuesday, Aug. 25: Temperatures around 98–100°F in the L.A. area.
- Wednesday–Friday: The heat intensifies, with triple-digit temperatures expected across many inland communities.
- San Fernando Valley: Temperatures could reach approximately 105–110°F.
- Inland valleys and foothills: Some locations could approach or exceed 110°F.
- Downtown Los Angeles: Near 100°F, with daily records potentially threatened.
- Coastal areas: Cooler than inland L.A., but still unusually hot.
- Nights: Overnight temperatures may remain in the 70s, reducing the opportunity for the body and buildings to cool down.
The heat is already breaking records: on Monday, Downtown Los Angeles reached 98°F, surpassing its previous August 24 record of 96°F. Long Beach also set a record at 97°F.
🔥 Why this heat wave is especially concerning
A strong area of high pressure is creating a prolonged period of hot, dry weather. The combination of very high temperatures, low humidity and occasional gusty winds is also increasing wildfire danger, particularly in the mountains, foothills and inland areas.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for portions of the San Gabriel Mountains and northern L.A. County, where humidity could fall into the single digits in some locations.
🥵 Health concerns
The biggest concern isn’t just the afternoon temperature—it’s the length of the heat wave and warm nights. The L.A. County Department of Public Health is urging residents to:
- Drink plenty of water, even before becoming thirsty.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Check on older adults, young children and people who may be particularly vulnerable to heat.
- Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
- Use air conditioning or visit a cooling location if your home becomes dangerously hot.
- Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
📅 How long will it last?
This is not expected to be just a one- or two-day spike. Current forecasts indicate very hot conditions continuing through at least Friday and potentially into the weekend, with some forecasters projecting the broader L.A. heat wave could persist toward the end of August.
