Metrolink Fare Increase Starts Today
Metrolink’s new fare increase takes effect today, Monday, October 5, 2026, across its Southern California regional rail system. It is the agency’s first systemwide fare increase in 13 years.
What Metrolink riders will pay
| Fare | Previous | Starting Oct. 5 |
|---|---|---|
| One-Way Ticket | Varies by distance | About 14% higher on average |
| SoCal Day Pass – Weekday | $15 | $19 |
| SoCal Day Pass – Weekend/Holiday | $10 | $12 |
| LA Zone Day Pass | $5 | Still $5 |
| 5-Day Flex Pass | Varies | May increase, stay the same, or decrease |
| Monthly Pass | Varies | May increase, stay the same, or decrease |
Nearly 80% of one-way ticket purchases will rise by $1 or less, while fewer than 1% will increase by more than $2.
Why fares are going up
Metrolink says the increase is necessary because of higher operating and maintenance costs, ridership and fare revenue that remain below pre-pandemic levels, and declining state and federal funding. The Metrolink Board approved the changes on June 26.
The increase comes at a difficult time for riders because Metrolink has also dealt with budget pressures and service reductions this year. Some riders interviewed at LA Union Station criticized paying more while service has been reduced.
Discounts remain
Metrolink is not eliminating its everyday discount programs. The 50% Student/Youth discount remains, as do discounts for seniors, riders with disabilities, Medicare recipients, veterans and active-duty military members, and qualifying low-income riders. California EBT cardholders can continue receiving the 50% Mobility-4-All discount when purchasing eligible fares at station ticket machines.
Also important: free transfers to participating connecting local transit systems remain available with Metrolink tickets and passes.
One additional change begins today: Metrolink is ending Print-at-Home ticket sales. Riders can instead purchase through the mobile app, station ticket machines, LA Union Station ticket windows, or contactless payment on eligible San Bernardino Line and Arrow trips.
There is one notable break coming immediately after the increase: Metrolink will offer free rides systemwide Wednesday, October 7, for California Clean Air Day, including the Arrow service.
