Watts Towers Rebuild into a Park

By on July 7, 2026

The Bezos Earth Fund is helping fund a major transformation of the area surrounding the Watts Towers Arts Center Campus, with a $10 million grant aimed at creating new green space, improving public access, and expanding community gathering areas in the heart of Watts.

The project is being led by the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and community organizations.

While the Bezos Earth Fund contributed $10 million, the overall renovation combines funding from multiple sources—including California Proposition 68 park funding, City of Los Angeles investments, philanthropy, and nonprofit partners—making it one of the largest investments ever made in the Watts Towers campus. The campus renovation is now close to being fully funded.

This project is expected to transform the historic Watts Towers campus into a world-class cultural park where visitors can enjoy the iconic towers alongside shaded walking trails, an outdoor amphitheater, expanded green spaces, public art, educational programming, and year-round community events while preserving one of Los Angeles’ most important historic landmarks.

What’s being built

The redesigned campus will create a much larger, greener public space surrounding the historic towers. Planned improvements include:

  • 🌳 Hundreds of new trees and drought-tolerant landscaping to provide shade and reduce urban heat.
  • 🚶 A network of walking paths connecting visitors throughout the campus and improving accessibility.
  • 🎭 An outdoor amphitheater for concerts, performances, educational programs, and community events.
  • 🌼 New gardens featuring native California plants and outdoor learning areas.
  • 🪑 Expanded seating, picnic areas, and gathering spaces.
  • 🚲 Better pedestrian and bicycle connections to surrounding neighborhoods.
  • 💧 Green infrastructure to capture stormwater and improve environmental sustainability.
  • 🎨 Outdoor art, interpretive exhibits, and educational spaces celebrating the history of Watts and the legacy of Simon Rodia.
  • 💡 New lighting, landscaping, and wayfinding signage to make the campus safer and more welcoming.

More than just a park

Project leaders say the renovation is intended to:

  • Increase access to parks in one of Los Angeles’ most park-deficient neighborhoods.
  • Create a healthier environment with more shade and green space.
  • Support arts education and cultural programming.
  • Provide outdoor venues for festivals like the annual Day of the Drum Festival and Jazz Festival.
  • Strengthen Watts as a regional cultural destination while serving local residents first.

Construction timeline

Construction is now underway after years of planning.

  • Summer 2026: Groundbreaking begins.
  • 2026–2028: Major construction and landscape improvements.
  • Spring 2028: Expected grand reopening of the renovated campus. During portions of construction, tours and some campus programming have been temporarily paused.
