By Let's Talk Los Angeles on August 10, 2026
For families across Los Angeles, it’s almost time to trade summer schedules for backpacks, classrooms and early mornings. The Los Angeles Unified School District confirms that the 2026–27 school year begins Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
LAUSD BACK TO SCHOOL: Be Ready for the First Day
Wednesday, August 12, 2026
Here are some practical tips specifically for Los Angeles Unified students and families:
- Check your school’s schedule. Start and dismissal times vary by campus, and some schools may have a shortened or minimum day. Check your individual school’s website before Wednesday.
- Prepare for LA traffic. The first morning can mean heavier traffic around campuses. Leave home early, especially if you’re driving or using public transportation.
- Confirm school transportation. Students using an LAUSD bus should make sure their transportation arrangements, pickup location and schedule are confirmed. LAUSD has information for Fall 2026–27 transportation through its Parent Portal.
- Pack the backpack Tuesday night. Include notebooks, folders, pencils/pens, a charged school device if required, headphones if requested, and any forms your school has asked students to return.
- Lay out clothes the night before. Check your school’s dress-code or uniform requirements and have clothes, shoes and backpack ready.
- Get back on a school sleep schedule. Start going to bed and waking up earlier now rather than waiting until Tuesday night.
- Eat breakfast. LAUSD says students get free breakfast and lunch each school day under California’s Universal Meals program.
- Bring a refillable water bottle. August can be hot in Los Angeles, so students should stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Know your campus. Middle and high school students should review their class schedule, room numbers and campus map ahead of time when available.
- Kindergarten and new students may need extra preparation. Talk about drop-off, pickup and who will meet the child after school so they know what to expect.
- Parents: update contact information. Make sure the school has current phone numbers, emergency contacts and authorized pickup information. LAUSD also provides Parent Portal resources through its main website.
- Leave extra time Wednesday morning. Parking, drop-off lines, buses and campus entrances can all be busier than normal on the first day.
- Start with a positive attitude. The first day is about getting comfortable, meeting teachers and classmates, learning routines and starting the new year strong.
