Kaiser Permanente Watts Campus
Kaiser Permanente brought a medical campus to the Watts community because the area has historically faced healthcare disparities, underinvestment, and limited access to medical services. The new campus was designed to improve access to healthcare and continue Kaiser Permanente’s long-standing relationship with Watts.
Kaiser Permanente has stated that the project is also an investment in health equity and community revitalization. The organization intentionally combined medical care, mental health services, education, and community support programs on one campus because factors such as education, family stability, and access to resources significantly affect health outcomes. Kaiser has also invested more than $1 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations serving Watts residents.
A History Rooted in Watts
The connection goes back nearly 60 years. After the Watts riots (also called the Watts Uprising) in 1965, community leaders identified major unmet needs in mental health, education, and family services. In response, Kaiser Permanente opened the Watts Counseling and Learning Center in 1967 to support children and families regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.
Why Build the New Kaiser Campus?
The new campus, was built to:
- Bring healthcare services closer to residents in an underserved area
- Address longstanding health inequities in South Los Angeles
- Serve approximately 39,000 residents and Kaiser members who live and work in the community
- Provide medical care and social services in one location
- Invest in community health beyond traditional healthcare delivery
Services Offered at the Watts Campus
The new campus includes:
- Primary care and family medicine
- Pediatrics
- Behavioral and mental health services
- Pharmacy
- Laboratory services
- Radiology and imaging
- Counseling and educational programs
- Early childhood education and preschool services
- Community rooms and outreach programs
Kaiser brought a medical campus to Watts because the community has endured decades of underinvestment and limited healthcare access, and Kaiser wanted to create a permanent hub that addresses both medical needs and the social conditions that influence health and well-being.
