405 Freeway Weekend Closures Fri 12/19 to Sun 12/21

By on December 19, 2025

Ongoing weekend closures and lane reductions on the Interstate 405 (I-405) Freeway have continued to significantly impact travel through the Sepulveda Pass, one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Los Angeles. These disruptions are part of a major pavement rehabilitation project led by Caltrans, aimed at improving road conditions and extending the lifespan of the freeway.

The construction work generally takes place during extended weekends, beginning late Friday night—typically around 10 p.m.—and continuing through early Monday morning, usually reopening by 5 a.m. During these periods, multiple lanes in both northbound and southbound directions are closed, often reducing traffic to as few as three lanes each way. The lane reductions are designed to allow crews to safely perform repairs while minimizing weekday commuter disruption.

In addition to lane closures, Caltrans may temporarily shut down certain on-ramps and off-ramps near key intersections, including Santa Monica Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, and other major access points. The specific ramps affected can vary by weekend, depending on the phase of construction and operational needs.

These closures have occurred on a recurring basis—often every other weekend—throughout the duration of the project. While the work is necessary to improve long-term roadway safety and ride quality, it has caused notable congestion in surrounding areas. Alternate routes such as Sepulveda Boulevard remain open, but drivers should expect heavy traffic and delays, particularly during peak travel hours.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan ahead by checking real-time traffic updates before traveling through the area. Caltrans regularly updates closure schedules based on construction progress and weather conditions, making advance planning essential for anyone traveling through the Sepulveda Pass on weekends.
