Undocumented Immigrants get driver’s licenses in California
As of January 2015 Undocumented Immigrants can apply for a driver’s licenses in the state of California. California has more immigrants than any other state. It is home to more than 10 million immigrants Foreign-born residents represented more than 30% of the population of seven California counties: Santa Clara, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Mateo, Imperial, Alameda, and Orange. And half of the children in California had at least one immigrant parent. California legislators recently signed AB 60, allowing about 1.4 million undocumented immigrants the right to obtain a California driver’s license. Most immigrants in California come from Latin America, but recent arrivals are primarily from Asia. California is one of 10 states that now provide licenses to immigrants that are in the country illegally. The licenses issued to immigrants without legal status will include a distinctive marking and are not considered a valid form of federal identification. Applicants must submit proof of identity and state residency and pass written and road driving tests. Those who don’t possess foreign government-issued identification on a list of approved documents can be interviewed by a (DMV) Department of Motor Vehicles investigator to see if they qualify.
