Voting Polls Open Today in L.A.
Today, Tuesday, June 2, 2026, is California’s Statewide Direct Primary Election. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Los Angeles County voters are deciding several important races in addition to the governor’s contest.
Governor of California
With Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited, voters are choosing which two candidates advance to the November general election under California’s “top-two” primary system. Major contenders include:
- Xavier Becerra
- Tom Steyer
- Steve Hilton
- Katie Porter
- Antonio Villaraigosa
- Tony Thurmond
The top two finishers, regardless of party, will move on to the November election.
Los Angeles Mayor
One of the most closely watched races in California is the race for Mayor of Los Angeles. Incumbent:
- Karen Bass
Is facing challenges from:
- Nithya Raman
- Spencer Pratt
- Several other candidates
The top two candidates will likely advance to a November runoff. Key campaign issues include wildfire recovery, homelessness, public safety, housing, and economic recovery.
U.S. House of Representatives
Los Angeles-area voters are also helping determine several congressional races. California’s newly redrawn congressional districts have attracted national attention because they could affect control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Competitive districts include parts of Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the Central Valley.
Los Angeles City Races
Depending on your address, your ballot may also include:
- Los Angeles City Council races
- Los Angeles Unified School District Board races
- City Attorney races (where applicable)
- City Controller races (where applicable)
Los Angeles City Ballot Measures
Los Angeles city voters are deciding several local measures, including:
- Proposition CB — Applying cannabis business taxes to unlicensed cannabis businesses.
- Proposition TC — Applying hotel occupancy taxes to online travel companies.
Los Angeles County Ballot Measures
County voters are considering several funding and tax proposals, including:
- Measure ER, a county sales-tax proposal that supporters say would help fund healthcare and other county services.
- Other local city and district measures depending on where you live.
What Los Angeles County Voters Are Talking About
The biggest issues driving today’s election include:
- Homelessness and housing affordability
- Recovery from the 2025 wildfire season
- Public safety
- Transportation and infrastructure
- Healthcare funding
- Cost of living
- The future direction of California after the Newsom administration
Because Los Angeles County contains 88 cities and hundreds of special districts, there is no single countywide ballot beyond the statewide offices and county measures. Your exact ballot depends on your home address.
