May is Asian American Month

By on May 15, 2026

May is officially Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI Heritage Month) in the United States. The celebration runs every year from May 1 through May 31.

The month honors the history, culture, and achievements of people of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander descent who have contributed to American society in areas such as:

  • Food and culinary arts
  • Entertainment and music
  • Science and technology
  • Business and entrepreneurship
  • Sports
  • Education
  • Civil rights and public service

The observance began as a week-long celebration in 1978 and was expanded by Congress into a full month in 1992. May was chosen to recognize:

  • The arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843
  • The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, built largely with Chinese immigrant labor

In recent years, the official term has evolved from “AAPI” to “AANHPI” to more fully include Native Hawaiian communities.

Across the country in May 2026, communities are celebrating with:

  • Cultural festivals
  • Food fairs and night markets
  • Museum exhibits
  • Dance and music performances
  • Film screenings
  • Educational panels
  • Community celebrations and parades

Some major 2026 celebrations include:

  • The annual Gold Gala in Los Angeles celebrating Asian Pacific leaders in entertainment and culture
  • Smithsonian cultural programs and workshops in Washington, D.C.
  • Regional AANHPI festivals and community events happening throughout California and the U.S.
