LA’s New Air Taxi Launch for Fifa

By on May 14, 2026

Archer Aviation is developing an electric air taxi network in Los Angeles using its “Midnight” eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. The company’s goal is to launch commercial operations in Southern California in time for major global events including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.

One of the key pieces of Archer’s Los Angeles strategy is Hawthorne Municipal Airport, located just a few miles from Los Angeles International Airport and close to major sports venues including SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome. Archer announced plans to turn Hawthorne into the operational hub for its Southern California air taxi network.

Archer Plans for FIFA World Cup 2026

Los Angeles will host multiple matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Archer has already been named an Official Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter through a partnership with the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission.

The company plans to use its Midnight aircraft to:

  • Transport fans, VIPs, media, and event stakeholders
  • Reduce travel times around traffic-heavy Los Angeles
  • Connect airports and sports venues with short regional flights
  • Demonstrate electric urban air mobility technology during major global events

Expected Flight Network

Archer’s proposed Los Angeles network includes routes connecting:

  • LAX
  • Hawthorne Airport
  • SoFi Stadium / Hollywood Park
  • USC
  • Santa Monica
  • Burbank
  • Long Beach
  • Orange County
  • Van Nuys

The company says many trips that normally take 1–2 hours by car could potentially be reduced to approximately 10–20 minutes by air taxi.

Archer’s Midnight aircraft is designed for:

  • 1 pilot plus up to 4 passengers
  • Speeds around 150 mph
  • Short urban and regional flights
  • Lower noise levels than helicopters
  • Fast charging between flights

FAA Approval & Launch Timeline

Archer is still working through FAA certification requirements before full passenger service can begin. In May 2026, the company announced major progress in FAA certification and said it expects initial U.S. operations to begin in 2026 under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

The current forecast suggests:

  • Limited showcase operations could begin during FIFA World Cup activities in 2026
  • Expanded operations are expected leading into the LA28 Olympics
  • Hawthorne Airport is expected to serve as the main operational and maintenance hub for the LA network

At this stage, Archer has not yet announced public ticket pricing or finalized passenger routes for the World Cup. The company’s service rollout still depends on FAA approvals, infrastructure readiness, and vertiport construction.
