Los Angeles was founded on Sept. 4, 1781, by then-governor of California Felipe De Neve. At the time, California was part of Mexico, which was ruled by Spain. The original pueblo was located just northeast of downtown L.A., near Olvera Street. At the time, there was only a population of 44 people. Since then, the population has grown over the centuries to nearly 4 million.
