Mass immigration Arrests Set for Sunday

By on July 13, 2019

ICE is planning mass arrests Sunday, a move critics contend is designed to terrorize immigrant communities. Three los Angeles civil rights groups sued the federal government Thursday to try to protect thousands of immigrant families and children targeted for Sunday’s mass arrests by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. ICE is reportedly expected to arrest more than 2,000 immigrants in Los Angeles and elsewhere who have missed a court appearance or been ordered removed from the country, according to a report by the New York Times Thursday. The threat of mass deportations has Southern California’s large immigrant population on edge. President Trump on Friday confirmed reports of a nationwide immigration raid targeting large cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco on Sunday. It’s the second time over the last month that the President threatened mass deportations, setting off widespread panic in immigration communities as well as a series of lawsuits by civil rights and immigration advocates. The first raid was called off, prompting uncertainty about how seriously to take the president’s latest plans.

After it was announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would allegedly begin arresting and deporting immigrants and undocumented workers, Los Angeles officials began alerting immigrants on their rights and how to stay protected when the suspected raids begin.

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom posted a video to Twitter alerting those of their rights when it comes to ICE stating, “CA will always defend the rights of our immigrant communities.”

Los Angeles’ Mayor Eric Garcetti posted to Twitter stating, “No Angeleno should ever have to fear being snatched from their home or separated from their loved ones…”

The LAPD emphasized that they are, “committed to protecting the public through meaningful relationship building & community partnerships. The Department is not participating or assisting in any of these enforcement actions.”

In collective efforts to protect immigrants both Mayor Eric Garcetti and Governor Newsom listed several resources saying know your rights, “You do not have to open the door—you have the right against unlawful searches. You have the right to speak to a lawyer. You have the right to remain silent.”

Here is the information on the rights immigrants in both English and Spanish.

Red Cards are also circulating in many communities: Know Your Legal Rights!

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) has created Red Cards to help our communities assert their constitutional rights in encounters with federal immigration enforcement officials.
