California Bill to stop sell of sugary drinks w/kids meals
The PURPOSE OF THIS BILL is to stop the sell of sugary drinks with kids meals at restaurants and fast food eateries in the state of California. According to the author, the rates of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, and oral health diseases continue to rise to crisis levels in California. The author notes that sugary drinks are a major contributing factor to these diseases, and are the single leading source of added sugars in the American diet. The author states, research has shown that the daily consumption of sugary drinks significantly increases a person’s risk of developing chronic and preventable diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have shown as many as 34% of children consume fast food on a given day, and most kids’ meals include a sugary drink that can contain more than the weekly amount of sugar recommended for children. The author argues that this bill will improve children’s health by requiring a restaurant, which serves a meal primarily targeted and marketed to children, to make the default drink option served in those bundled meals a healthy beverage such as, water, sparkling water, flavored water with no added sweeteners, or milk. The author concludes, a sugary drink can still be provided at no additional cost, but the customer must explicitly ask to replace the healthy drink.
