Watts Up White Flight in Reverse Jordan Downs Housing Projects Redevelopment Update

By on June 6, 2017

City leaders and developers plunged shovels into dirt on 99th and Laurel street in Watts on Monday afternoon ceremoniously marking the start of construction and redevelopment of the Jordan Downs Housing Projects

Not long ago in LA there was a plight of the inflow of African Americans migrating to Los Angeles from the South or Southern States for a better way of life. During this time period racism was rampant in the south and it was the norm. When Blacks arrived to California in search of some freedoms it was usually by bus or train into Downtown Los Angeles. Still bound by limits to certain areas, they were not allowed to travel South of Slauson Avenue or East of Central Ave. It was the days of the Cotton Club in Harlem and Big Band performances along the Chitterling Circuit, Artist like Ella Fitz Gerald, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, and many more would perform in clubs entertaining colored only crowds. They would frequent Los Angeles to sing and dance at one of LA.’s Historical Hot Spots at the time and still is known as the “Dunbar Hotel” located on 42nd and Central Avenue, coupled with a offer of room and board during the time agreed for performances. With such a great influx of so many African Americans housing became a issue. Whites-caucasians of Los Angeles set out to live in areas that we now know as the suburbs (the emergence of white flight) cities like the Inland Empire, Riverside, San Bernardino, and the Valley. These are distant locales of Los Angeles with wide spread flat land and in some locations mountains and hills where there where not many blacks. Los Angeles county cities such as Watts, Compton, and later Inglewood became the settlement hub of most incoming Southern Blacks.  With limited resources available to the high number of constant arrival of families public housing was formed, needless to say it too encompassed (residential) racial segregation ideology, accompanied by social economic hardship burdens and lets not speak of police brutality to establish order in a city of migrating blacks.

Currently Los Angeles has so many Urban Economic (high priced) redevelopments in the making, what was once old Downtown buildings are now newly renovated and refurbished units sold as condo’s and town homes. Just do the math Los Angeles is actively building two football stadiums and hosting the 2024 Olympics LA is definately a city uprising.
